Effects of Different Disturbance Intensity on the Colony Size of Microcystis flos-aquaein Lake Taihu

Abstract

Disturbance induced by wind-wave is one of the important environmental factors that affect the lake ecosystem. To understand the effect of disturbance intensity on the colony size of M. flos-aquae in lakes, a simulation experiment in lab was conducted to measure the effects of different disturbance intensities (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 r·min-1) on the colony size of M. flos-aquaein Lake Taihu. The results showed that the colony size of M. flos-aquaeincreased and then decreased with the increasing of disturbance intensity under which the treatment groups simulated the disturbance induced by wind-wave for 24 h. The colony sizes of M. flos-aquaein the disturbance intensities 50 r·min-1 and 100 r·min-1 increased rapidly from 10.72μm and 10.58μm to 17.92μm and 39.50μm, respectively, which were significantly larger than that in the control groups (P=0.006, 0.000). However, There was no significant difference between the colony sizes of M. flos-aquae in the disturbance intensities 200 r·min-1 and 400 r·min-1 and that in the control groups (P=0.161, 0.727). The total extracellular polysaccharide content in the disturbance intensities 100 and 200 r·min-1 was significantly higher than that in the control groups at the end of the disturbance (P=0.001, 0.006), but there was no significant difference between the total extracellular polysaccharide content in disturbance intensities 50 r·min-1 and 400 r·min-1 and that in the control groups (P=0.180, 0.089). The results of study suggested that appropriate intensity of disturbance induced by wind-wave can significantly enlarge the colony size of Microcystis during short time, but too strong intensity of disturbance can not significantly improve the colony size of M. flos-aquae during short time, which is valuable for people to understand the breakout mechanism of Microcystis blooms in Lake Taihu.
