Abstract
Considering the large amount of sub-modules(SMs)cascaded on the arms in the modular multilevel convert-er(MMC)based high voltage direct current(HVDC)transmission system,attention is paid to the operation reliability. In order to fully implement the functionalities of MMC,its fault-tolerant operation without redundant SMs is investigat-ed,and a new redundancy protection control strategy based on energy balance and nearest level modulation is proposed when the SMs on the arms are removed symmetrically and the system is in an asymmetric state.The proposed strategy ensures that the converter can operate safely and stably without interruption. Finally,a 21-level two-terminal MMC-HVDC system is built in PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results show that the proposed redundancy protection control strategy is valid and effective.关键词
