Abstract

The applications of directly modulated DFB lasers are restricted by nonlinear distortions. To over-come the issues, the dual-parallel modulation technique is utilized. The suppression of the nonlinear distor-tions using the dual-parallel modulation method is researched theoretically. An integrated dual-parallel modu-lated (IDPM) DFB laser is achieved by fabricating two dual-parallel modulated DFB lasers on a single chip and packaging them with the same shell. Based on IDPM DFB, a simple radio-over-fiber system is designed. The experimental results show that the nonlinear distortions of directly modulated DFB lasers can be sup-pressed significantly utilizing the proposed method. The size and costs of the dual-parallel modulated DFB laser are reduced dramatically and its stability is improved. Hence the applications of the directly modulated DFB lasers can be expanded by the demonstrated method.
