Effects of Acid-Base Properties on Catalytic Performance of Supported Nickel-Based Catalysts for 2-Ethyl-2-Hexenal Hydrogenation

Abstract

α-Al2O3 prepared by a sucrose-assisted method was used as the support of metal catalysts, and their catalytic performance in liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2-ethyl-2-hexenal was evaluated. The results show that Ni/α-Al2O3 has excellent catalytic performance with 2-ethyl-2-hexenal conversion of 100% and 2-ethylhexanol yield of 92.8%. Moreover, effects of acid-base properties on 2-ethyl-2-hexenal hydrogenation was investigated by adding basic substances (LiOH, NaOH and KOH), acidic substances (acetic acid, boronic acid, zinc acetate and zinc stearate) and amphiprotic substance (γ-Al2O3), respectively. The results show that basic substances are beneficial for C=C bond hydrogenation and improve its hydrogenation rate. Meanwhile, acidic substances facilitate C=O bond hydrogenation and enhance its hydrogenation rate. Furthermore, γ-Al2O3 with weak acid and weak base sites contributes to both C=C and C=O hydrogenation, which improves the hydrogenation rates of both C=C and C=O bonds.
