Abstract

A digital elevation model ( DEM) of Lingding Bay′s western channel was produced using marine charts of 1960-1970, 1980, 1990, 1999, 2005, and 2012.Based on the DEM, the western channel′s morpho-logical change was quantitatively studied.The relationship between the human activities and the morphological changes was also examined.It was found that before 1980s, the western channel experienced deposition and shrink under natural conditions.After 1980 s, under the influence of human activities, the channel showed an erosion tendency.On the one hand, the sediment discharges reduced year by year due to the construction of reservoirs and dams, and the deposition rate decreased in the western channel.On the other hand, the water depth of the western channel increased significantly due to the channel dredging projects.The reclamation projects in the western shoal extended the length of sea-enter channel and the sediment flow was accelerated into the Lingding Bay.This process caused the deposition center of the western channel moved to south and promoted the erosion of the western chan-nel .Thus, under the influence of human activities in recent 40 years, the morphological characteristics of the west-ern channel changed from natural deposit to an erosion trend.This trend contributes to the channel stability and maintenance.
