Abstract

The effects of adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of congo red and solution pH on the ad?sorption capacity of tilapia fish scale to congo red were investigated by adsorption test. The adsorption mecha?nism were studied by FTIR and kinetic and thermodynamic analysis. The results showed that increasing the ini?tial concentration of congo red and adsorption time could increase the adsorption amount of fish scale to con?go red. The optimum adsorption conditions were as follows: congo red initial concentration was 50 mg/L, solu?tion pH was 6, adsorbent dosage was 2.0 g/L, scale of fish scale was 80 mesh, adsorption time was 3 h. The adsorption process of fish scale to congo red was in accordance with Lagergren quasi two order kinetic mod?el, and the adsorption process belongs to chemical adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption data of congo red by tilapia fish scales could be described by the Langmuir isotherm models. Fourier transform infrared spectros?copy (FTIR) analysis showed that both collagen and hydroxyl ash in tilapia fish scale were involved in the ad?sorption of congo red dye.
