Abstract

In order to study the influences of cellulose acetate (CA) particles on tar and phenol deliveries in mainstream cigarette smoke, two types of CA particles (T-shaped and C-shaped) were prepared via swing granulation process with glyceryl triacetate (TC) and carboxylmethylcellulose (CMC) as adhesives, respectively. The CA particles of different types and sizes were embedded in cigarette filters of conventional cellulose acetate fibre, the deliveries of tar and phenol in mainstream smoke of cigarettes with the same draw resistance were determined under ISO smoking regime, and the effects of CA particle type and size were investigated. In addition, the adsorption abilities of CA particle and cellulose acetate filter to phenol were compared according to the mass of absorbed phenol determined at different adding rates of CA particles. The results showed that:1) The effects of CA particle type and size on tar delivery in mainstream cigarette smoke and that of particle size on phenol delivery were marginal. 2) The selective adsorption ability of T-shaped and C-shaped CA particles to phenol differed significantly; at the adding rate of 25 mg/cig., the selective reduction rate of T-shaped particles for phenol delivery was more than 15.0% at a single puff, while the adsorption ability of C-shaped particles to phenol was not obvious. 3) At per unit mass, the selective adsorption ability of T-shaped particle to phenol was lower than that of cellulose acetate filter.
