Abstract

The characteristic parameters of the hybrid DC breaker has closely linked to the HVDC system configuration parameters in the grids constructed by half-bridge modular multi-level converter combined with hybrid DC breaker. The characteristic parameters on the one hand reflect the output level of the MMC-HVDC system, and on the other hand reflect the ability of the breaker to bear the most severe whole machine stress. Characteristic parameters extraction is the theoretical basis to realize the engineering application of hybrid DC breaker in the MMC-HVDC grid.Based on the study of application and principle and operation of the hybrid DC circuit breaker, five characteristic parameters and their mathematical correlation were extracted and analyzed.It confirms that those characteristic parameters represent the effect derived from both capacity of the grids and stresses on the breaker. In order to verify the validity of the parameter extraction and the mathematical correlation, a system-level simulation model in PSCAD/EMTDC was built. Finally, the implementation of 200kV hybrid DC breaker breaking test verified the accuracy of the simulation and mathematical analysis. The conclusion of this paper can effectively guide the design and application of the hybrid DC circuit breaker.
