Measurement of Solubility Parameters of Four Imidazolium-Base Ionic Liquids by IGC and HSPiP

Abstract

Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) was used to study solubility parameters of four imidazolium-base ionic liquids at 333.15, 343.15, 353.15, 363.15 and 373.15 K. Hansen solubility parameters of the four imidazolium-base ionic liquids were measured by Hansen solubility parameter in paractive (HSPiP) at 333.15 K. The solubility parameters of the four imidazolium-base ionic liquids measured by IGC at 333.15K are δ(EMIMOTF)=23.51(J?cm-3)1/2, δ(BMIMOTF)=23.39 (J?cm-3)1/2, δ(HMIMOTF)=22.79 (J?cm-3)1/2and δ(OMIMOTF)=22.31(J?cm-3)1/2. The solubility parameters of the four imidazolium-base ionic liquids measured by HSPiP at 333.15 K are δt(EMIMOTF)=24.28(J?cm-3)1/2,δt(BMIMOTF)=23.26(J?cm-3)1/2,δt(HMIMOTF)=22.79(J?cm-3)1/2and δt (OMIMOTF)=22.08 (J?cm-3)1/2. These results indicate that the two methods are consistent. HSPiP can simulate three-dimensional solubility parameter sphere of the ionic liquids, and good solvents or mixed solvents of the ionic liquids can be quickly selected according to the three-dimensional solubility parameter sphere. These results are helpful for the study of thermodynamic properties of ionic liquids and their solvent selection.
