Abstract

Gas-liquid two-phase flow was used in desalination processes with membrane distillation. Nitrogen or low-pressure water vapor was piped through tubular carbon membranes and their strengthening effects under different operation conditions were evaluated. The result shows that both nitrogen and low-pressure water vapor can increase permeate flux, and low-pressure water vapor has better strengthening effects. The permeate flux increases and then slightly decreases with the increase of nitrogen flux, while it continuously increases with the increase of water vapor flux. When the feed inlet temperature is low and the salt concentration is high, the flux improvement efficiency via two-phase flow is higher. The difference of flux improvement efficiency between nitrogen and low-pressure water vapor is less obvious when studied at higher feed inlet temperature. This study is useful in further investigation of membrane distillation enhancement processes.
