Abstract

Methyl levulinate is a new bio-based chemical with wide application. In this study, alcoholysis of wheat straw to methyl levulinate catalyzed by aluminum sulfate was studied. Effects of different factors on methyl levulinate yields were investigated and the process conditions were optimized by response surface methodology. Methyl levulinate yield of 53.4%(mol) is achieved under the optimum conditions of reaction temperature 191oC, reaction time 1.0 h, catalyst dosage 1.15 mmol and wheat straw 1.01 g. Moreover, the catalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The reusability of the catalyst is further explored, and the results show that Al2(SO4)3·18H2O can be easily recovered with good catalytic activity after five cycles. This study provides a green and effective way for the production of methyl levulinate from wheat straw.
