Abstract

Complexation performance is a key factor that determines the applicability of polymers as scale inhibitors. The complexation performance of a modified aspartic acid/malic acid copolymer (PAMA) with Ca2+in supersaturated CaCO3solution was studied by a static scale inhibition method under different water quality and conditions. The results show that when only Ca2+is presented in water, 4mg?L-1of PAMA exhibits the optimal complexation performance with a maximum capacity of 1632.78 mg?g-1. The capacity decreases with the addition of Fe3+, Cu2+or Fe3+/Cu2+mixture, while Zn2+can improve the complexation performance. In the presence of Ca2+/Zn2+, Ca2+/Cu2+, Ca2+/Fe3+and Ca2+/Fe3+/Zn2+/Cu2+, the maximum complexation capacity are achieved with 20 mg?L-1PAMA, which are 1681.00 mg?g-1, 1460.04 mg?g-1, 1465.09 mg?g-1and 1464.11 mg?g-1, respectively. Therefore, PAMA exhibits good complexation performance and can be used as a scale inhibitor of calcium carbonate.
