Abstract

Methyl Tert-butyl Ether (MTBE) is an important chemical used as an octane booster in gasoline.Maximum production of the MTBE and Minimum energy consumption can be achieved by exploring the operating conditions.The reactive distillation process in MTBE unit was simulated on Aspen Plus platform,a user kinetic subroutine programmed by Fortran was incorporated into this simulation allowing the design and optimization of the reactive distillation process.The results obtained from the simulation are in good agreements with the operating date of industrial plant.The temperature,liquid composition and reaction-rate profiles within the reactive distillation column were presented and the influence of these parameters on MTBE product purity and isobutylene conversion were discussed.The result show that the concentration of 98.5% in MTBE product can be reached and the isobutylene conversion can be up to 99.7%.
