Study on Basic Principle and Its Realization Methods for DC Circuit Breakers

Abstract
DC circuit breakers are the key elements of DC grids.We studied the basic principle and its realization methods for DC circuit breakers.Firstly,the two basic ways of breaking DC current were discussed.Secondly,the realization methods based on the way by the series inserted infinite resistor were analyzed.Thirdly,according to the way by the series inserted capacitor,three DC circuit breaker structures were proposed.Finally,the economy of four DC circuit breaker structures were compared.The following conclusions can be drawn.(1) There are two basic ways of breaking DC current,namely the way by the series inserted infinite resistor and the way by the series inserted capacitor.For the former one,the maximum fault current appears at the moment of inserting the resistor.For the latter one,the maximum fault current appears after the capacitor is inserted for some time.(2) DC circuit breakers that have been used in practical engineering are based on the way by the series inserted infinite resistor.(3) The converters with DC fault handling capability are based on the way by the series inserted capacitor.(4) Three DC circuit breakers based on the way by the series inserted capacitor are proposed,including the single branch DC circuit breaker with series inserted capacitor,the double branch DC circuit breaker with series inserted capacitor,and the triple branch DC circuit breaker with series inserted capacitor.All these three DC circuit breakers can be employed to deal with DC faults effectively,but the single branch DC circuit breaker with series inserted capacitor has the shortest fault handling time.(5) Among the DC circuit breakers compared in this paper,the triple branch DC circuit breaker with a normal current path,a main transfer branch and a lumped series inserted capacitor,has the lowest cost.The results can provide references for the research and development of DC circuit breakers.关键词
