Experimental study on energy harvesting performance of passive flapping foil turbine

Abstract
A new type of passive flapping foil wind and tidal energy capturing generator is designed to study the en-ergy harvesting performance of a flapping foil turbine. The current pushes the foil to move up and down, which drives the crank shaft and generator. An angle magnifying gear mechanism is erected between the foil rotation shaft and the connecting rod,to optimize the pitch angle between the foil and the incoming flow. A test is conducted in a circulating water tunnel,and the energy harvesting performance with various current speeds and Strouhal Number St are studied. Experimental results show that the power is roughly the cube of the current velocity with the same St;while the current velocity has less influence on the energy harvesting efficiency,η. The efficiency increases and then decreases as St increases and reaches its maximum 26% when St =0.2. The unsteady motion of the flapping foil is numerically simulated,and a good agreement with experimental results is determined. A large magnitude of the effective angle of attack is found to cause dynamic stall and results in a decrease in efficiency when St < 0.2.关键词
