Abstract

A simulated annealing-based signal timing method is proposed for adaptive signal control in the connected vehicle environment. This method takes the average intersection delay as the model objective and uses neural network for short-term traffic flow forecast. Via the COM development interface of VISSIM traffic simulation, the authors test the proposed signal control method using the measured traffic flow data of an intersection in Chengdu, China. Simulation results show that the proposed method can significantly improve the intersection traffic throughput. The testing results are compared to the ones obtained using genetic algorithm and it is found that the simulated annealing algorithm is better. The average delays in three testing periods reduce by 15.61s/veh, 0.47s/veh, and 8.53s/veh, respectively. The average numbers of stops also decrease by 0.59 times/veh, 0.04 times/veh, and 0.27 times/veh. The experiment results proves the effectiveness of the method.
