Effects of Calorie Restriction and Alternate Day Fasting on Oxidative Stress in Mice

Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of caloric restriction and alternate day fasting on the levels of SOD,GSH-Px and MDA in 12-month-old male c57 mice.Methods 32 male c57 mice of 12 months old were randomly divided into 3 groups:control group (normal feeding),caloric restriction group (fed with 60% of normal diet),alternate day fasting group;after 16 weeks,animal models were established;the livers of the mice in each group were taken to measure SOD activity,GSH activity and MDA content.Results The activities of SOD and GSH in caloric restriction group increased much higher while MDA dropped down lower than those in control group (P<0.05);the activities of SOD and GSH in alternate day fasting group increased higher while MDA dropped down slightly lower than those in control group (P<0.05);the activities of SOD and GSH in caloric restriction group increased slightly higher while MDA dropped down slightly lower than those in alternate day fasting group (P<0.05).Conclusion To varying degrees,caloric restriction and alternate day fasting can improve the oxidative stress in mice at certain degree,caloric restriction is more effective in improving the oxidative stress balance in mice than alternate day fasting.
