Mediating Effect of Self-esteem on Relationship Between Perceived Social Support and Depression in College Students

Abstract
Objective:To learn the level of depression,perceived social support and self-esteem in college students,and explore the mediating effect of self-esteem on relationship between perceived social support and depression.Methods:Totally 359 college students from Beijing's two universities were assessed with the Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),Self-Esteem Scale(SES) and Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ (BDI-Ⅱ).At last,350 effective questionnaires were collected.Results:The BDI-Ⅱ scores were negatively related with the PSSS scores(r =-0.389,P ＜0.01),and were negatively related with the SES scores (r =-0.556,P ＜ 0.01).But self-esteem and perceived social support were positively correlated(r=0.402,P＜0.01).Selfesteem played a mediating role between perceived social support and depression.The confidence interval from Bootstrap output were 95％ (-0.1710,-0.0747).Conclusion:College students' perceived social support can indirectly affect depression through affecting self-esteem.Promoting perceived social support in college students is essential for enhancing their self-esteem and mental health.关键词
