Association of Serum Galanin with Agouti-related Protein Levels among Type 2 Diabetic Patients with Different Body Mass Index

Abstract
Objective To investigate the association between serum galanin (GAL) with agouti-related protein (AgRP) levels among type 2 diabetic patients with different body mass index (BMI). Methods We recruited 195 consecutive diabetic patients from Department of Endocrinology, Baoding First Central Hospital from October 2015 to December 2016 and by referring to the diagnostic criteria for overweight and obesity for Asian adults defined by WHO, we grouped them into simple diabetes group (n=71, 19.0 kg/m2≤BMI<25.0 kg/m2), overweight diabetes group (n=70, 25.0 kg/m2≤BMI<30.0 kg/m2), obese diabetes group (n=54, BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2). In addition, 50 healthy adults who received medical examination in this hospital during the same period were selected as the control group. The serum GAL, AgRP levels and other clinical data were compared between the 4 groups. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to explore the relationship of serum GAL and AgRP levels with other clinical indicators. Results The serum GAL level decreased successively in the obese diabetes group, overweight diabetes group, simple diabetes group and control group (P<0.05). AgRP level in overweight diabetes group was higher compared with obese diabetes group but lower compared with both simple diabetes group and control group (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in serum AgRP level between the control group and the simple diabetes group (P>0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that serum GAL level had a positive linear correlation with BMI, level of serum HbA1c, or Ln (HOMA-IR) (P<0.05), and a negative linear correlation with Ln (FINS) or serum AgRP level (P<0.05);the AgRP level had a negative linear correlation with BMI, serum TG, ALT or GAL level (P<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that BMI, Ln (HOMA-IR), serum HbA1c, Ln (FINS) and AgRP levels were the influencing factors of GAL (P<0.05);BMI, serum levels of TG, ALT, and GAL were the influencing factors of AgRP (P<0.05). Conclusion Both elevated GAL level and decreased AgRP were found in type 2 obese or overweight diabetic patients, indicating that the two factors may participate in the occurrence process of overweight or obesity in this population.关键词
