Abstract

Fiberglass composites have been widely used in non-primary loading bearing structures of High Speed Multiple Units, such as the vehicle hood cover. The hood cover should ensure the functional connecting will not be influenced when collision accident happens, not merely satisfy the normal requirements of the regular function. That is, the GFRP materials applied in the hood cover should form the damage of penetration under certain collision conditions. This paper presents enormous experimental investigations on low-velocity impact response of various composite laminates with different fiber contents, fiber lengths, and positions of the delaminations. Methods for assessing the damage performance of the vehicle hood for High Speed Multiple Units are discussed in this study. The results indicate that the morphology of woven composite laminates in damage of penetration could satisfy all the requirements for the vehicle hood of High Speed Multiple Units. In the experimental investigations on low-velocity impact response of woven composite laminates prototype, the morphology of the prototype with penetrating damage was appropriate for coupler getting through, and no sheet debris which influence the connecting of couplers was generated.
