Abstract

In order to attain the safety length of acceleration lane at freeway for vehicles merging, the on-ramp vehicles' driving into freeway model was established and the critical headway of the traffic volume of main road shoulder lane was analyzed. Security merging probability of the merging vehicles on the acceleration lane was studied based on it. It revealed the influence law of acceleration lane length and the traffic flow of main road shoulder lane on the security merging probability combined with the distribution characteristics of main road vehicles. Finally, it validated the model and the Tianjin Section of Rong Wu Highway in on-ramp merging region is taken as an example. The results show that an increase in traffic volume will result in low security merging probability and the difficulties of lifting probability gradually raise under the condition of different traffic volume of main road shoulder lane. When the traffic volume of main road shoulder lane above is 400 veh/h?600 veh/h and the length of acceleration lane is 400 m, the security merging probability can basically meet the service demand. On the basis of this analysis, more length of the acceleration lane can not result in lifting of the merging probability.
