Abstract

Thermal barrier coatings with different thicknesses were prepared by a plasma spraying method with Al2O3 coated ZrO2/Y2O3 composite powder as a raw material. The phase composition and microstructure of coating were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electronic microscopy. The phase structural stability and the bonding strength as well as the high-temperature oxidation resistance were investigated. The results indicate that the thermal barrier coating is composed by stablet-zirconia phase and shows an intense bonding strength between the coating and the matrix. The coatings with different thicknesses present the similar morphological characteristics, such as the smooth surface, the clear grain boundary and the uniform grain size. However, the porosity and cracks decrease significantly with the increase of coating thickness. The oxidative weight rate of the coating increases slowly with the increase of the soaking time at 1050℃ for > 10h. Furthermore, the stability, high-temperature oxidation resistance and thermal insulation effect of the coating increase with the increase of coating thickness.
