Abstract

A steel damper with slits cut from the steel plate was designed for seismic retrofitting of an existing concrete frame.Energy is mainly dissipated through in-plane flexural inelastic deformation of vertical strips.Hysteretic behavior of the steel damper was investigated experimentally by low cycle loading test,indicating that the steel damper exhibits stable hysteresis and significant strain-hardening under loading reversals.In order to establish a hysteritic model of the steel damper considering the strain-hardening effect,a parallel model composed of Bouc-Wen material and hardening material was proposed for interpreting the hysteretic behavior of the steel damper,and analytical modeling was implemented by using OpenSEES program,a procedure was developed based on MATLAB program for determining parameters of the hysteretic model.The accuracy was demonstrated by comparing hysteretic curves obtained from numerical simulation and test results,respectively.The proposed parallel model can readily be incorporated into inelastic dynamic response analysis of a frame equipped with the steel damper.The procedure was also applied to prediction of hysteretic response of the steel dampers during a shaking table test.
