Abstract

In order to ensure the accuracy and reliability of automated measurements,the comparison with manual measurements by readouts calibrated on a regular basis is mandatory.It is stipulated that the variance analysis should be used as a quantitative means in the assessment of automated dam safety monitoring system in Chinese specifications and codes.However,it is found that the suggested 2o criteria of variance analysis method is actually not suitable for the comparison of manual and automated measurements because the variance of manual and automated measurements is either too big for long-term series or too small for short-term series to be the reliable criteria.It is proposed that the sensor accuracy standard should be used instead as the criteria for the assessment of automated dam safety monitoring system.It means that the difference between the manual and automated measurements should be judged on the basis of the accuracy of the sensors.Some suggestions are also made on the modification of the Chinese specifications related to automated dam safety monitoring.
