Abstract

Microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization with poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) as the shell material and hydrogen silicone oil as the core material. The effect of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), gum arabic (GA) and SDBS/GA complexes on the morphology of microcapsules at different reaction time was investigated. The microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope (OM) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The core material content of microcapsules was measured by the solvent extraction method and TGA, respectively. The results show that the microcapsules prepared with SDBS exhibit irregular shapes and rough surfaces with higher core material content. By using GA as the emulsifier, the resultant microcapsules show regular shapes and smooth surfaces with a broader size distribution. The microcapsules prepared by using SDBS/GA complexes are regularly spherical and present a narrower size distribution, however, with lower core material content. The microcapsules show better thermal resistance with an initial decomposition temperature up to 229.8 ℃.
