Abstract
Objective To report efficacy of skin expansion for auricle reconstruction in patients with mastoid area scar,previously failed auricle reconstruction,low hairline,or thick and less than flexible skin in the mastoid area.Meth-ods Confounding conditions in 12 patients with auricle defects included scar in the mastoid area(n=5,with 3 presenting with bilateral auricle defect from burns and 2 showing auricle defect by splitting force),previously failed auricle recon-struction(n=2),low hairline(n=2)and thick and less than flexible skin in the mastoid area(n=3).Skin expansion was applied in all 12 cases before auricle reconstruction.Results Among the 12 cases,expander protrusion and subsequent infection occurred in 1 patient with left auricle defect from a splitting injury due to problematic blood supply to the ex-panded skin flap.The exposed expander was removed and the wound healed following local wound care.The second skin expansion and auricle reconstruction was successful six months after the primary operation.Ear reconstruction in the rest 11 cases (12 reconstructions) was successful and uneventful. Conclusion Skin expansion can be successfully used for auricle reconstruction even under difficult conditions such as scar in the mastoid area.关键词
