Fatigue evaluation of rib-to-deck welding detail on orthotropic steel bridge deck with UHPC overlay

Abstract
In order to study the fatigue performance of rib-to-deck welding detail at orthotropic steel bridge deck with UHPC composite overlay, field tests were carried out on the Fochen West Extension Bridge under random traffic flow. The research found that the stress level at deck side is clearly lower than the rib side at rib-to-deck detail, which indicates that the UHPC composite structure significantly increases the stiffness of the deck plate system, and hence not only reduces the stress level, but also decreases the fatigue loading cycles at deck plate side. It is also found that the rib-to-deck detail can clearly identify each truck axis when directly loading on it, which means each passing truck axis can product one loading cycle. It is concluded that under the current traffic flow, the monitored maximum stress range at all locations is lower than the constant amplitude fatigue limit of the detail, therefore the infinite life at the rib-to-deck welding detail is expected on the Fochen West Extension Bridge.关键词
