Abstract

Multi-scale inversion proceeding sequentially from low frequency data to high frequency data is an efficient strategy to improve the stability of full waveform inversion(FWI). However the performance of multi-scale FWI strongly relies on the quality of low frequency data. In real case,limited by the data acquisition and quality, the inversion result of conventional multi-scale VWI is usually not accurate enough due to the low quality of or sometimes missing low frequency data. In order to improve the inversion stability of FWI when the low frequency data is not available,we propose a multi-scale inversion meth-od based on the relationship between the wavenumber recovered by FWI and the scatter angle. By inverting for the low wave-number component using the wide scatter angle component rather than the low frequency data,the proposed method is capa-ble of mitigating the dependence of FWI on low frequency data. The hybrid multi-scale inversion strategyis suggested based on the frequency-wavenumber filter. The synthetic data test on SEG/EAGE overthrust model verifies that the proposed meth-od not only can recover the low wavenumber component which cannot be inverted by the conventional multi-scale FWI, but also is capable of avoiding the cycle-skipping issues.The new method can invert for the model successfully without the low frequency data,which significantly outperforms the conventional method.
