Abstract

According to the noise analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) system, the noise reduction effects by using different wavelet transform methods in the OCT images of mouse ocular were compared. The wavelet transform methods included continuous wavelet transform, discrete wavelet transform, and stationary wavelet transform (SWT). In the present work, the image noise reduction quality were quantitatively evaluated by 4 parameters such as mean square error, root mean square error, peak signal-to-noise ratio and signal-to-noise ratio. The experiments demonstrated that the best performance of the image noise reduction was obtained by using the improved-threshold SWT method. From the denoised OCT image, it could identify the iris structure which could not be clearly observed in the original image. Compared to the original image noise, the mean square error of the denoised image was reduced to 35.5%. However, the signal-to-noise ratio and the image quality of the denoised image were increased by 25.2% and about 4.5 dB, respectively. In summary, the SWT-based noised reduction method improves the ophthalmic OCT image quality and keeps the image details.
