Abstract

The objective of this trial was to compare the effects of 2-hydroxy-4-methylselenobutanoic acid (HMSeBA) and sodium selenite (SS) on selenium content in plasma and milk,and serum antioxidant capacity of lactating dairy cows under short-term trail conditions.Eight Holstein dairy cows,similarly in parity,days in milk and milk yield,were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups with 4 cows per group according to a completely randomized design,and 0.3 mg/kg DM HMSeBA and SS were supplemented in diets in different groups,respectively.The pre-trial lasted for 2 weeks and the trial lasted 4 weeks.The results showed as follows:1) milk fat percentage (P =0.060 3) and milk fat yield (P =0.055 2) of dairy cows in HMSeBA group tended to be higher than those in SS group,and dry matter intake,milk yield and other milk compositions were not significantly affected by selenium sources (P> 0.05);2) selenium content in plasma and milk of dairy cows in HMSeBA group were significantly higher than those in SS group (P<0.05);3) serum glutathione peroxidase activity was not significantly affected by selenium sources (P>0.05),however,serum total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase activity in HMSeBA group were significantly higher than those in SS group (P<0.05),and serum malondialdehyde content was significantly decreased (P<0.05).In conclusion,under short-term trail conditions,dietary supplemented with 0.3 mg/kg DM HMSeBA significantly increases selenium content in plasma and milk,and serum antioxidant capacity compared with the supplementation of the same level of SS.
