Relationship Between Modern Pollen/Charcoal Assemblages and Vegetation/Fire in Northeast Yunnan

Abstract

Pollen/charcoal analyses on 47 surface samples collected from lakes,reservoirs and ponds in northeast Yunnan to study the relationship between modern pollen/charcoal assemblages and vegetation/fire.Pollen analyses of surface samples show that,arboreal pollen of pollen spectra is dominated by Pinus,following by Alnus,Betula,evergreen Quercus,and Lithocarpus/Castanopsis.And herbaceous pollen is dominated by Poaceae,Polygonaceae,and Cruciferae.Meanwhile,results of pollen analysis also show that,pollen percentages of trees and shrubs are less than those of upland herbs.Our study reveals that modern vegetation is largely affected by human activities,as indicated by results of principal component analysis (PCA) on modern pollen spectra.PCA results show that the first factor influencing the modern pollen assemblages is the intensity of human activities,and the second factor is temperature.Charcoal analyses show a marked difference in charcoal concentrations among lakes,reservoirs and ponds.Charcoal concentrations are not only associated with forest fire frequency and intensity near sampling water bodies,but have a certain relationship with some festivals such as the Torch Festival popularly held in some national minorities also.
