Abstract

Objective To analyze the expression level of miRNA-21 ( miR-21) in cancer tis-sues of patients with prostate cancer and its relationship with the prognosis. Methods The data of 76 patients with prostate cancer undergoing surgical resection in the West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 2011 to June 2012 were analyzed retrospectively. The expression levels of miR-21 in cancer tissues and paracancerous normal prostate tissues were detected by specific TaqMan probe real-time quantitative PCR method, and the relationship with the prognosis was analyzed. Re-sults The relative expression of miR-21 in prostate cancer tissues was significantly higher than that in adjacent tissues [(2. 68±0. 54) vs (1. 14±0. 42)] (t=19. 62, P<0. 05). MiR-21 was highly ex-pressed in 57 cases ( 75%) and lowly expressed in 19 cases ( 25%) . There were significant differences between the two groups in TNM stage, Gleason score, recurrence and metastasis ( P<0. 05) , while there were no significant differencs in age, prostate volume and serum prostate-specific antigen level ( P>0. 05) . The average survival time of group with low expression level of miR-21 and group with high expression level of miR-21 was 32. 5 months and 24. 8 months, respectively. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the difference between the two groups was significant ( P=0. 019 ) . Conclusion miR-21 is highly expressed in prostate cancer tissues, which can indicate the prognosis.
