Abstract

Objective To study the acute toxicity of three Araceae toxic Chinese herbs and their processed products, including pinelliae rhizoma, arisaematis rhizoma and typhonii rhizome. Methods The experiments were designed according to Bliss algorithm, and mice were injected intraperitoneally with aqueous extract of Chinese herbs, and continuously observed for 14 days. The LD50of pinelliae rhizoma, arisaematis rhizoma and typhonii rhizoma were calculated with acute mortality. Results The LD50of pinelliae rhizoma, arisaematis rhizoma and typhonii rhizoma were 5. 381 g/kg, 21. 508 g/kg, 39. 311 g/kg, respectively, but their processed products had no significant toxicity. Conclusion Three Araceae toxic Chinese herbs including pinelliae rhizoma, arisaematis rhizoma and typhonii rhizoma have significant acute toxicity, among which the toxicity of pinelliae rhizoma is the strongest, but the toxin could be reduced significantly after being processed.
