Abstract

In the lumber and wood furniture industry, wood dust not only causes breath problems to worker health, but also exists an explosion risk, which would have devastating results. It is critical for companies to prevent the risks and put in place measures to protect their workers. In the existed and scattered theoretical calculation models of explosion caused by wood dust, the calculation results of the theoretical model were greatly deviated from the experimental data because the heat absorption effect of wood dust was not considered. In fact, in the heat release reaction of wood dust explosion, in addition to the gas absorption, wood dust also absorbs heat energy. Based on the existed experimental data and wood dust explosion pressure model, an improved maximum pressure model of wood dust explosion was pro-posed by taking into account of wood dust absorption of heat. The novel numerical simulation model was developed by using the existed experimental data. The results showed that the calculated values of the improved model were consist-ent with the experimental data in the cases of different wood dust masses and different wood dust particle sizes, and the minimum error was within 1%. Compared with the fitting results of the existed theoretical models, the goodness of fit between the theoretical maximum explosion pressure and the experimental results increased about 13%. The theoret-ical calculated results also showed that in the process of the wood dust explosion, the ratio of the heat absorption of wood dust to the heat absorption of gas was up to 0.24. Therefore, the heat absorption of wood dust plays an important role, which can not be ignored in the process of wood dust explosion. The improved model can calculate the maximum pressure of wood dust explosion more accurately, and the results have theoretical significance for the prevention and control of wood dust explosion in the woodworking industry.
