Abstract

Based on a single-cylinder diesel engine test bench, the paper investigates the relationship between the combustion characteristic of biodiesel and the vibration performance of cylinder liners. The study found that the calorific value of biodiesel is lower than that of petro-diesel. Under a same operating condition, the injection quantity of biodiesel is more than that of diesel, which makes the combustion duration of biodiesel longer, and then affects its vibration response. It can be derived from the comparison of combustion pressure and vibration response of liner in form of both time-frequency representation and root mean square, both the duration and amplitude of the dynamic responses of biodiesel are smaller than that of diesel fuel around the frequency of 6~8.5 kHz and 0~2 kHz. However, due to the coupling effect of piston side thrust, the combustion of biodiesel excited much more vibration components near the modal frequency band of the cylinder liner. At low and medium speeds, the overall vibration level of biodiesel is lower than that of diesel, but the intensity of biodiesel's local vibration response is higher than that of diesel as the piston reaches TDC on the compression stroke.
