Comparisons in finite element analysis of locking and anatomical plates used in treating SandersⅡ calcaneal fractures

Abstract
Objective To compare the biomechanical stability of locking and anatomical plating systems used for fixing Sanders type II calcaneal fractures,and provide theoretical basis for clinical work. Methods The three-dimensional calcaneal fractures model of Sanders type II was established from the CT data acquired from a volunteer, and the load was set by the anchoring and anatomical fixation material. After assigning the anchoring and anatomical fixing material property, applying load, setting the analysis criteria, the displacement, relative displacement, bone tissue and internal fixation stress state were analyzed and definite the internal fixation stability. Results For the Sanders IIA and Sanders IIB calcaneal fractures, the degree of displacement of the fracture and the relative displacement of the fracture in the locked plate group were less than that of the anatomical group. Sanders IIC calcaneal fractures, the displacement of two groups are similar. Locked plate group showed a relatively low stress on plate and a higher stress on surrounding bone. Conclusion For Sanders IIA and Sanders IIB type fractures, the stability of locking plate internal fixation system is better than that in anatomical plate. Also finite element analysis is a relatively reliable method, and the experimental results need be further verified by biomechanics and clinical studies.关键词
