Abstract

Objective To report auditory characteristics of age-related hearing loss in different age groups for a discussion of features of senile deafness and for advancing its prevention and intervention. Methods A community popu-lation was divided into four age groups (45-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80-89 years), and data regarding general health condi-tion, audiological tests, hearing aid benefits and tinnitus were collected. Results 1) The auditory curve featured mainly high-frequency decline, with no significant low-frequency decrease between 45-69 years of age. 2) The average thresh-old over speech frequencies was 29.27±13.65 dB HL, 31.46±14.14 dB HL, 36.11±13.80 dB HL and 44.46±10.64 dB HL for the four age groups, respectively. 3) High-frequency thresholds showed significant differences among the age groups, with significant decrease even in the youngest age group. 4) The incidence of tinnitus was not statistically differ-ent among the age groups. 5) Hearing aids have a significant impact on age-related deafness. Conclusion Age-related hearing loss affects mainly high frequencies, while thresholds over language frequencies gradually increases along with aging but low frequency thresholds decrease more noticeable only after the age of 70 years.
