Abstract
Objective To report clinical characteristics of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in children patients and treatment efficacy. Methods Clinical data of 42 pediatric cases (<18 years) with unilateral SSHL diagnosed and treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from December, 2016 to December, 2017, including clinical fea-tures and treatment efficacy, were compared to those of 152 adult (age 19-59 years) cases of unilateral SSHL collected during the same period. Results Gender distribution, disease side, and course of disease were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P>0. 05). The incidence of recent virus infection was 30.9%in children patients, significantly higher than that of the adult patient group (7.2%) (χ2=17.073, P<0.01). The severity of hearing loss at admission was different between the two groups (χ2=10.833, P= 0.013), being mild in 2.4% of the children patients as compared to 15.8%of the adult patients (χ2=5.270, P<0.05), and severe in 59.5%of the children as compared to 36.2%of the adults (χ2=7.398, P < 0.05). There also was a difference in hearing loss frequency distribution between the two groups (χ2=10.630, P=0.014). More children acquired total deafness than the adults (χ2=7.398, P=0.006). After systematic compre-hensive treatment, the total effectiveness rate for both groups was 78.4%, (66.7%for children and 81.6%for adults, χ2=4.3144, P=0.034). Conclusions While incidence of sudden deafness in children is low, the rate of virus infection is high-er and hearing loss more severe, while treatment outcomes poorer, as compared to adults.关键词
