Abstract

Objective: To observe the antidepressant effect of Baihe Dihuang decoction. Methods: Healthy female SD rats were randomly separated into the blank control group, CUMS (chronic unpredictable mild stress) group, positive medicine group, and Baihe Dihuang group. Depression model was induced by CUMS combined with isolation in rats. Behavior changes of the rats were assessed by forced swimming test, the content of monoamine neurotransmitter and monoamine oxidase in hippocampus were determined by ELISA method. Results: Compared to the blank control group, the immobility time of forced swimming were increased, the contents of DA, 5 - HT and NE were increased, and MAO activity was decreased, and MAO activity was increased in the model group. After medication, the contents of DA, 5 -HT and NE were increased significantly and MAO activity was greatly decreased in the Baihe Dihuang group. Conclusion:Baihe Dihuang decoction has positive antidepressant effect on CUMS model rats, which mechanism may be associated with decreasing the activity of MAO, and increasing the concentration of 5 - HT, NE, and DA in the brain.
