Abstract

Objective To explore the effectiveness of the nonsurgical correction of congenital auricular deformities. Methods A retrospective was performed on 28 infants (34 ears) with congenital auricular deformity who were treated with the ear molding system from July 2017 to December 2017. The average age at initiation of treatment was 37.62 days (12~105 d). Doctors who were not involved in treatment and parents carried out a survey one month after treatment. All cases were divided into two groups according to the age: <6 weeks group and ≥6 weeks group, and the effectiveness of the two groups was analyzed and compared. Results Thirty-four infant ear deformities were treated with the ear molding system. The mean duration of treatment was 33.88 days (18~59 d). Thirty-one ears (91.2%) and 3 ears (8.8%) were rated as very satisfied or satisfied by doctors who were not involved in treatment; Twenty-nine ears (85.3%) and 5 ears (14.7%) were rated as very satisfied or satisfied by parents. There was no significant difference between the<6 weeks group and ≥6 weeks group (P>0.05). Complications included minor superficial excoriation (n=1) and rashes (n=2). Conclusion The nonsurgical treatment of the ear molding system is effective in treating auricular deformities in 3 months of age, especially for newborn ear deformities.
