A survey of knowledge of gout in patients with gout

Abstract
Objective To assess patients’ knowledge level of gout and provide evidence for further development of gout patient education. Methods A statistical analysis was conducted after a questionaire survey on the general information. One hundred and forty-seven gout patients were enrolled in People's Hospital, Huainan, Anhui from January 2016 to December 2017, and their knowledge on gout (pathogeny, diet, medicine, blood uric acid target value, and concomitant symptom, etc.) was investigated. Results All 147 questionnaires were completed and valid, with the response rate was 100%. Ninety-six (65. 3%) patients knew that the onset of gout was related to high serum uric acid, 24 (16.3%) patients believed that the onset of gout was caused by bacteria or virus, and 27 (18.4%) patients did not know the causes of the disease. One hundred and eighteen ( 80.3%) patients understood that seafood and animal innards could result in a higher serum uric acid, only 7 ( 4.8% ) patients believed that bean products, green bean, and cauliflower were able to lower serum uric acid, and 3 (2%) patients thought that high-fructose food was detrimental to the disease. Thirty-two 32 (21.8%) patients knew that serum uric acid lowering medicines were mainly Allopurinol and Benzbromarone, and 92 ( 62. 6% ) believed that colchicine, NSAIDS, and glucocorticoid were effective in reducing serum uric acid. Only 19 (12. 9%) knew that the target value of serum uric acid should be below 360μmol/L while 90 ( 61.2% ) patients believed the target value were below 420μmol/L-the highest normal value. And 38 (25.9%) patients did not know the value; and 63 (42.9%) patients knew the common concomitant diseases of gout. Logistic regression analysis showed that patients’ differences in gender, age, degree of education, and course of disease did not entail discrepancies in their knowledge of gout. Conclusion Gout patients are far insufficient in their knowledge of gout.关键词
