Research Progress on Bioactivity of Plant Polyphenols and Application in Poultry Production

Abstract
Plant polyphenols are a kind of complex secondary metabolite of phenols and exist in plants. Their structure is characterized by phenol as the basic structure and polyhydroxy substituents of the benzene ring. Plant polyphenols include not only molecules with polyphenols, but also phenolic acids such as phenolic acids and phenolic alcohols. The plant polyphenols have been reported from simple phenolic acids to complex struc-tural cinnamic acid, flavonoids, stilbenes, chalcone, anthocyanins, coumarins, tannins and lignans. Many studies have confirmed that plant polyphenols possess biological functions such as scavenging free radicals, pre-venting DNA damage, regulating cellular antioxidant defense systems as well as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity. This paper systematically reviewed the structural characteristics of plant polyphenols and the biological activities of antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, hypolipidemic and hypoglyce-mic activity and its application in poultry production. It aims to provide a theoretical basis and reference for the development and utilization of plant polyphenols in the future. [ Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2019, 31(2) :491-499]关键词
