Effects of Essential Oil on Growth Performance, Antioxidant Capacity and Immune Function of Broilers

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary essential oil ( EO) on growth perform-ance, antioxidative capacity and immune function of broilers. A total of five hundred one-day-old Arbor Acres male broilers with good health and closely weight were randomly assigned to five groups with ten replicates of 10 broilers each, including: 1 ) control group, basal diet; 2 ) EO50 group, basal diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg EO; 3) EO100 group, basal diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg EO; 4) EO200 group, basal diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg EO; 5) EO400 group, basal diet supplemented with 400 mg/kg EO. The ex-periment lasted for 42 days. The results showed as follows: 1) compared with the control group, the average daily gain, average daily feed intake and the ratio of feed to gain ( F/G) of broilers in the experimental groups were not significantly different ( P>0.05) , but the F/G in EO400 group was 3.4% lower than that in the con-trol group. 2) The digestibility of dry matter, energy, crude fat and crude protein in the experimental groups was significantly higher than that in the control group ( P<0.05) . 3) The serum total superoxide dismutase ac-tivity of broilers in EO200 group was significantly higher than that in EO50 group and the control group ( P<0.05) , and the serum immunoglobulin G content was significantly higher than that in the control group ( P<0.05) . In summary, the dietary EO has no significant effects on growth performance of broilers, but it can im-prove the digestibility of some nutrients and significantly improve the antioxidant capacity and immune function of broilers.[ Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition, 2019, 31(2) :831-838]关键词
