Abstract

[Objectives]This study was undertaken to explore the effect of exogenous ascorbic acid (ASC)on the vigor of oat seeds under Na2 SO4 stress.[Methods]Oat seeds were primed with ASC at different concentrations (0,0.5,1.0, 1.5,and 2.0 mmol·L-1 ),and germinated under Na2 SO4 stress at three different concentrations (0,50,and 100 mmol·L-1 ).The alteration ofseed germinationratio,germination index,mean germination time,and seedling vigor index was analyzed.[Results]Study results indicated that Na2 SO4 stressproduced inhibitory activity on seed germina-tionrate,germination index,and seedling vigor index of oat seeds with extendedaverage germination time.However, these negative impacts were compensated by ASC priming at certain concentration.The vigor of oat seeds was im-proved by ASC priming under Na2 SO4 stress,and these effects were closely related to the concentration of both ASC and Na2 SO4 .This study determined that the highest growth rate and vigor were reached out at the ASC concentration of 1.5 mmol·L-1 coupled with Na2 SO4 stress at 100 mmol·L-1 .[Conclusion]ASC priming can improve seed vigor, but should be used with caution according to the seed vigor of oat seeds and the degree of salt stress.
