Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of antenatal anthelmintic treatment on milk yield and milk quality of ewes.Twenty female small tailed Han sheep (STH) and 20 female Ujumqin sheep (UJU) , which were naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) were selected and randomly assigned to the anthelmintic group and the non-anthelmintic group according to a 2×2-factor test design.The ewes in anthelmintic group were dewormed 30 days before the expected lambing date.Milk yield was recorded from laming day and milk samples were collected to determine the composition of milk for 28 days post-lambing.The results showed that antenatal anthelmintic treatment significantly increased the milk yield of STH and UJU ewes (P<0.001) , but the degree of influence between two species was different, with greater impact for STH ewes than UJU ewes.Moreover, antenatal anthelmintic treatment significantly increased the contents of milk fat (P=0.008) and milk protein (P< 0.001) and freezing point (P=0.010) of milk, while significantly decreased somatic cell count (SCC) (P<0.001) , milk ash content (P=0.041) , pH (P<0.001) and conductivity (P=0.007) of milk.In conclusion, antenatal anthelmintic treatment can increase milk yield and milk quality of ewes, and the degree of influence for STH ewes is greater than that for UJU ewes.
