Abstract

Free wire-type metal particles within SF6 direct current (DC) gas-insulated equipment, represented by the wall bushing in the whole power system, greatly threaten the insulation system by distorting the electric field and inducing partial discharge (PD), and easily lead to accidents. In order to investigate the influence of free wire-type metal particles on SF6 decomposition characteristics under HVDC, we established an HVDC experimental platform to carry out SF6 decomposition tests under stable PD, which was generated by using a ball-bowl electrode with different diameters, shape and size of the metal particles. And the volume fractions of three SF6 characteristic decomposition components (SO2 F2, SOF2 and SO2) were tested by gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC/MS) to obtain the main features of these components under different diameters of free wire-type metal particles. The experimental results show that the volume fraction and total formation of the three SF6 characteristic decomposition components increase with time, but the trend of formation rates is different. The effective formation rates of the three sulfur-containing gases are ranked by diameters as follows: 0.3 mm>0.4 mm>0.5 mm>0.6 mm. After 24 hours, and the rates of total volume fractions of the three SF6 characteristic decomposition components are in following sequences: the wire-type particles>lamellar particles>spherical particles. The free wire-type metal particle defects have a significant impact on the sulfur-containing characteristic decomposition components of DC gas insulation equipment and are correlated with diameters. The results can provide references for improving the technology of DC gas-insulated equipment fault diagnosis and condition monitoring.
