The effect of meaning in life on drug relapse risk:The mediating roles of self-esteem and depression

Abstract
Objective:To explore the relationship between drug abstainers'meaning in life and drug relapse risk, and the possible mediating role of self-esteem and depression between them.Methods:A total of 255drug abstainers under compulsory rehabilitation were surveyed with the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Self-esteem Scale, Short Version of Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) and Drug Relapse Risk Scale.Results: (1) Drug abstainers'meaning in life was positively correlated with self-esteem (r=0.240, P＜0.001) , and was negatively correlated with depression and drug relapse risk (r=-0.300, -0.208;P＜0.001) ;Self-esteem was negatively correlated with depression and drug relapse risk (r=-0.387, -0.281;P＜0.001) ;Depression was positively correlated with drug relapse risk (r=0.591, P＜0.001) . (2) Meaning in life influenced drug relapse indirectly through the mediating role of depression and through the chain mediating role of both self-esteem and depression. (3) The mediation effect size of depression was-0.130, which accounted for 68.783％of the total effect.The chain mediation effects size of both self-esteem and depression was-0.046, which accounted for 24.339％of the total effect.Conclusion:Meaning in life affects drug relapse risk through two indirect paths:Through the mediating role of depression and the chain mediating role of both self-esteem and depression.关键词
