Abstract

Low interfacial tension and high salt-tolerance surfactants are now necessary for enhanced oil recovery. In the present study, branched hexadecanol polyethoxylene ester (i-C16 OH5 EO) was synthesized via polymerization of ethylene oxide using branched hexadecanol as starting agent. The surface activities and oil/water interfacial tension of i-C16 OH5 EO were determined by Wilhelmy method and spinning drop technique, respectively. Results showed that the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of i-C16 OH5 EO was 6.3 mg/L, and the corresponding surface tension was 27.8 mN/m. What' more, the i-C16 OH5 EO also showed high ability of reducing oil/water interfacial tension. The interfacial tension between decane and i-C16 OH5 EO aqueous (0.03%) was almost 10-3 mN/m, and the interfacial tension between crude oil and i-C16 OH5 EO aqueous reached 10-2 m N/m under the codition of NaCl 10%. This results indicated that the present surfactant possesses high salt-tolerance.
