An Iconographic Study of Avalokitesvara (Eleven-headed with thousand hands and eyes) in Cave 31 of A'erzhai Grottoes
摘要
Abstract
This paper is an iconographic analysis of the eleven-headed with thousand hands and eyes Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in Cave 31 of A'erzhai Grottoes. With a comparative study of its counterparts in the iconographies of traditional Han Mahayana Buddhism and Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism, the author tentatively illustrates the stylistic features of the iconography of the eleven-headed with thousand hands and eyes Avalokitesvara in A'erzhai Cave 31. The author identifies the head arrangements of the Avalokitesvara in A'erzhai Cave 31 with Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Based on the study of the characteristics of the costumes and adornments of this specific Avalokitesvara painting in Cave 31 as well as the studies of the features of the costumes, adornments and the peculiarities of the head cloth of the Mongolian donor images in the same cave, the painting date of this particular Avalokitesvara back to Northern Yuan period.关键词
