Abstract

Objective To explore a noninvasive, sustainable, sensitive and effective method for detecting the pressure changes in osteofascial ventricular pressure, which may be contribute to early diagnosis and treatment for acute compartment syndrome. Methods Three experiments were designed as below: ① 20 acute compartment syndrome models with 7cm-diameter gypsum fixation were used to detect the external pressure values by pressure sensors during the internal pressure changed at 10 kPa,20 kPa,30 kPa, 40 kPa, 50 kPa, 60 kPa and 70 kPa. ②10 gypsum-fixed acute compartment syndrome models with diameters of 5 cm, 7 cm and 10 cm were used to detect the external pressure values collected by the pressure sensor when the internal pressure changed. ③5 acute compartment syndrome models with 7cm-diameter gypsum fixation were used to detect the external pressure by pressure sensor at the same time on 7 consecutive days when the internal pressure changed. And repeated measurements were conducted. Results The internal pressure value of the model of compartment syndrome was positively correlated with the external pressure measured by the pressure sensor(r = 0.956). There were no significant differences in the value of external pressures measured at different time points, as well as in different diameters of acute compartment syndrome models. Conclusion It is confirmed that internal pressure of the fascia can be detected indirectly by the pressure sensor, which provides a novel idea for early diagnosis and continuous monitoring of acute compartment syndrome.
